Founded in 1987 APEX MODELS is Europe's leading independent dedicated specialist R/C retailer supplying the hobby market with quality kits, parts and accessories from a wide range of manufacturers. Below is a selection of these with vehicle products that they offer.
HPI Racing. (US based)
Probably offering the widest choice of predominately nitro powered vehicles. The smallest truck being the 2WD Rush Evo and 4WD MT2 both in RTR versions with .15 size engine complemented by the MT2 SS in kit form with an upgraded .18 size pull start engine. The Rush has a pull start engine and the MT2 a Rotostart unit.
There are 5 models of the ever popular Savage monster truck. The RTR with options of .25, 3.5 and 4.6 engines and the kit form SS without engine or with .25 engine included. This truck has attracted the widest choice of after market private label parts.
All the RTR models have two speed gearboxes with the option of reverse. Apart from the 3.5 engine which has a pull start all use a hand held Rotostart unit.
Touring cars complete the range and available with the electric PRO4 in kit chassis format without a body and Nitro3 RTR with several painted body options and NITRO3 SS kit version sharing the same engines as the MT2.
Hot Bodies. (US based)
This is a company associated with HPI offering 1/8-scale nitro buggies and “truggies” (a buggy with monster truck wheels and tyres) as well as upgrades for the HPI Savage.
The buggy range consists of the Lighting RTR and Lighting PRO being in kit format with improved specification but no engine. “Truggie” Stadium RTR and Stadium PRO models complement these.
The Savage upgrades are branded as Truckzilla offering conversions with longer wheelbase with larger wheels and tyres plus either one or two larger engines for more power and torque.
Hong Nor Racing (Far East)
A specialist company run by Jamie Booth offering a “race specification” 1/8-scale buggy assembled with unpainted body and no radio equipment.
Power Racing (Far East)
An alternative specialist company offering a “race specification” 1/8-scale buggy in RTR format with radio fitted and painted body and distributed in the UK by Schumacher Racing.
Schumacher (UK)
A long established private company offering both 1/10 electric touring cars and 1/10 Nitro trucks all manufactured in England.
The touring cars are in kit chassis format with no electrics. To tempt the up and coming novice the original Mission has been retained in both composite at sub £100 and carbon fibre versions, the latter being stronger but more expensive. The newer improved versions are named Mi2 and two versions have been retained with carbon fibre being used for chassis and shock tower components on the more expensive one.
Nitro models all share the same large .21 engine, tuned exhaust pipe and 3-speed gearbox offering outstanding performance of up to 80MPH due to the high power to weight ratio. There are both 2WD and 4WD 1/10 scale trucks named respectfully the XTR 3E and Menace with the addition of a Menace GTR 1/8 scale touring car. All are available is assembled form for the customer to provide and fit the radio equipment or in RTR format. Due for release shortly is the much awaited Havok a new generation fun truck to replace the famous XTR range.
Tamiya (Japan)
This company is market leader in entry level 1/10 scale electric touring car kits offering several chassis designs e.g TB02, TT01, TL01 with different body options “from the box”. Unlike manufacturers of kits for more serious racers Tamiya include basic speed controllers and motors to take away some decision making for the less experience hobbyist.
To complement the touring cars a selection of electric off road vehicles is also offered ranging from 1/10 scale buggies to the Clod Buster monster truck with 4WD and four wheel steering. Added to this is the Wild Willy army jeep, ideal for “wheelies”.
For the Nitro market there is a range of 4WD 1/10-scale buggies. All based on a common chassis the Nitro Thunder and Nitro Blaster are RTR vehicles identical except for the body colour and the Nitro Force is in kit form and comes with road tyres. All have .15 pull start engines and unique body design allowing starting with the body in place.
Team Associated (US)
One of the most established manufacturers best known for RC10 TC4 1/10 electric touring car and RC10 B4 truck designed for racing. (The RC10 name has been retained from the first ever model). Although usually in chassis kit format RTR models have recently been introduced to tempt the newcomer to the Associated brand.
To meet the demand for nitro vehicles a MGT monster truck and 1/10 truck RC10GT, both in RTR format have been introduced, Although slightly larger the MGT is a direct competitor to the HPI Savage but is unique in offering a dual pull and cordless drill starting option. Two speed gearbox with single speed reverse is featured as standard
The latest RC18T satisfies the latest popularity of mini size 1/18 scale electric trucks for both fun and serious racing. Supplied in RTR 4WD format disposable AA size batteries or miniature rechargeable battery packs can be used.
Team Losi (US)
In many ways a direct competitor to Team Associated and as well known.
Racing standard 1/10 electric buggy chassis kits in both 2WD, the XXX-BK2 and 4WD, the XXX-4 are offered.
The LST nitro monster truck in is only available as a full RTR version and although similar in size to the Team Associated MGT has a larger .26 engine with a Rotostart unit and unique giant single bodied shock absorber bodies compared with small twin ones used by competitors. Two speed gearbox with single speed reverse is featured as standard
A 1/18 scale 2wd MINI T electric truck complements the range and is available in RTR with radio and a PRO version without radio.
Traxxas (US)
This company is recognised as the original monster truck manufacturer.
The current Revo nitro model incorporates four in board shock absorbers and the traditional Traxxas starting method, which utilises a small electric motor attached directly to the engine which eliminates the need for a glo starter. Although slightly smaller and lighter than the HPI Savage it is offered with a high performance .18 engine. Two speed gearbox with single speed reverse is featured as standard. To cater for the 2 wheel drive market their latest release is the JATO and is fitted with the same power package 2.5 engine as the REVO.
Xray (Eastern Europe)
Xray produce a unique range of top quality cars for the race market. Their cars range from a soon to be released M18T mini 18th scale truck to a range of 10th scale scale tourers through to the top of the range XB8 competition 1/8 race buggy.
